IF you’ve always wanted to have a go at the Australasian Safari, but were a bit hesitant, here’s a way to go on much of the same tough route, mix with the participants and experience it without having to take all the risks.

The Safari, also known as Australia’s Dakar, has a category called the Adventure Tour.

The seven-day off-road motorbike tour, from Perth through the northern Goldfields to Kalgoorlie, travels parts of the same route as competitors, costs a lot less and is not as stressful.

All you need is to be a competent dirt bike or trail bike rider and have a spirit for adventure.

The Australasian Safari is from September 22 to 30.

Spokesman Andy van Kann said last year’s tour riders loved the experience, and some of them have now entered the Safari proper.

“There’s no doubt it’s a serious ride, with up to 400km on the bikes each day,” he said.

“The difference is we finish riding in the early afternoon most days and generally end up at a spectacular and secluded spot that isn’t accessible to anyone else.

“We’re a pretty unique tour in that our riders get to mix with the Australasian Safari competitors who come from around the globe to test their skills against the best.

“Some of them use the Safari as a testing ground and practise for Dakar, so it really is a big deal.”

The Adventure Tour fee of $2800 includes an experienced tour director, guide, licences, fees and insurance, fuel, catering  and a ticket to the prize presentation dinner.

You’ll need your own bike, or bike leasing, and on-event servicing can be arranged.
