ONGOING funding of $1.5 million for a Shenton Park-based mental health program is expected to have many benefits for thousands of West Australians.
The Act-Belong-Commit campaign is the world’s first comprehensive, positive mental health promotion initiative and was developed by staff at Shenton Park Curtin University campus.
Healthway recently approved ongoing funding of $1.5 million for the project.
Campaign manager Amberlee Laws said the program was about getting people to think proactively about their mental health in the same way many do for their physical health.
“Most of us think of things we should do to look after our physical wellbeing, but it’s not often we think about strengthening our mental health,” Ms Laws said.
“Keeping physically, socially and mentally active, having a sense of belonging, a meaning and purpose in life are fundamental to good mental health.
“Whether it’s keeping fit in the serene surrounds of Kings Park, catching up with friends and family over a BBQ at the beach, learning to play the guitar, learning a language, volunteering to help someone less fortunate or taking a hobby course… these things all help to boost our mental wellbeing.”
Towards the end of last year about half of West Australians knew about the Act-Belong-Commit message, with those aware more likely to do something to keep mentally healthy.
