CANNING VALE resident Rachel Lamb (21) has returned from Dubai after representing Australia in the Young Leaders in Diabetes program as part of the World Diabetes Congress.

The inaugural youth event was the staging ground for future leaders in global diabetes advocacy and formed an important part of the congress.

Diabetes WA chose to sponsor Ms Lamb’s attendance in Dubai because of her forward-thinking ideas and passion for diabetes advocacy.

With 366 million people now living with diabetes globally, the most significant issues raised by the youth leaders included global access to life-saving insulin, mental health and raising awareness of the condition.

“Having type 1 diabetes means I depend on a regular supply of insulin to survive, “ Ms Lamb said.

“I’m lucky that this isn’t a problem for me. In many developing countries across the world, insulin is a luxury, which means that diabetes is a death sentence for many children and young people.

“Through the Young Leaders in Diabetes program, I hope to help turn this situation around and make an impact.”

The next World Diabetes Congress will be held in Melbourne in December 2013.

The last time the congress was held in Australia was in Sydney almost 25 years ago (1988).

Go Rachel - you are truly admirable! Rachel has not only attended the World Congress, but on a greater more challenging experience worked with the diabetes team to help organise a group of 20+ kids at the recent diabetes camp - the kids had a ball - thanks again! Keep spreading your smile - it inspires so many.

As the co-founder of YWAIT (Young West Aust Insulin Takers) Rachel Lamb truly is a leader of young Australians. I have followed her work and she is giving those with Type 1 Diabetes a voice in the health as well as the wider community. She is a true inspiration as this condition is not easy to come to terms with - especially just after you have been given the 'keys to life' when turning 18. Yet rather than wallow in self-pity, Rachel goes out of her way to support other youth with T1D and to help them deal with many issues they face on a daily basis.
I can think of no one better suited to represent Australia in this important forum for the future health of hundreds of thousands of people.
I look foward to hearing more about this important condition and of Rachel's successes. She truly does make a difference to those with T1D!
