SICK and injured visitors and residents on Rottnest Island will be treated and transported in a new $180,000 ambulance that replaces an eight-year-old Landcruiser.
The all-wheel-drive vehicle, funded through State Government funds provided to the Fremantle Hospital and Health Service, was shipped to the island before the busy summer period.
Nurse practitioner Karen Jackson said the new ambulance could transport more than one patient at a time and there was space to resuscitate if necessary.
Mrs Jackson said the new ambulance also looked like a St John ambulance, so was easily recognisable.
Health Minister Kim Hames said the Landcruiser had served the nursing post well but the new ambulance would better cope with the harsh environmental conditions to ensure the post could continue to provide the highest quality care.
