THE City of Belmont hopes to help make locals healthier thanks to funding from the Federal Government.
The city received a grant of $566,000 the Count Us In – Creating Healthy Communities Together project.
The money will be used to provide a national program called Beat It, which is a healthy lifestyle program.
It will also go towards developing culturally appropriate fitness sessions, training and volunteer programs for community members, education on food budgeting and preparation based on the FOODcents program and gym memberships.
Belmont Mayor Phil Marks said with summer here, healthy eating and exercise programs were being designed to teach healthy habits and combat obesity.
“With the help of this federal grant we will be able to implement innovative physical activity and healthy eating programs into our community,” he said.
“Programs like these will make it easier for families that are endeavouring to make a healthy change and to look forward to a more active future.”
