SARAH Stevens – like so many women – has a serious shopping habit that came as a shock to her boyfriend Kyle Bowden.
Astounded by her burgeoning collection, mostly sought online, he often teased her saying her incessant need for clothes must be due to a monster in the closet, gobbling up all her garments.
He also told her that her clothes would be enough to set up and sustain his own store.
With the concept playfully in mind – together with a passion for internet retail and supporting Aussie designers – the young Perth couple recently turned the running joke into reality with online store aptly named The Closet Monster.
“Online shopping is much easier than driving down to an outlet and parking and then discovering it doesn’t have your size or colour – it’s the way of the future,” Ms Stevens said.
Mr Bowden added: “There’s also much more variety online and getting your order in the mail is like receiving a gift.”
With no experience in starting a business – Ms Stevens is an accountant and mr Bowden is finishing a law degree – the pair put time and effort into researching the field.
Offering solely Australian labels, the store includes clothing lines Aprils Chance (Brisbane) and Faux Pas (Perth), and Owl of Eden handmade jewellery (Melbourne).
