TEENAGER Brandt Honda inspired Western Australia to a home gridiron win in Kelmscott on Saturday night.
The WA Raiders defeated Queensland 32-10, with Honda scoring two scintilating touchdowns on kick returns, to remain undefeated in the inaugural National Gridiron League.
Honda’s first runback touchdown opened the scoring at John Dunn Memorial Park and WA was able to double its lead right on the stroke of half time when quarterback Damien Donaldson connected with a long touchdown pass to Bojan Vucic.
Queensland scored their only touchdown in the third quarter but WA hit back through the elusive Donaldson, who scored from close range.
The visitors then kicked a field goal to make the scoreline 20-10, but that simply set the scene for Honda to dazzle again as he returned the resultant kick-off the length of the field to deliver a knockout blow to the visiting Sun Devils.
The Raiders added another touchdown late in the game to round out the scoring.
The Kelmscott game was WA’s only opportunity to play in front a home crowd in the NGL but the win has set them up for a likely title deciding game in Sydney against the NSW Wolfpack on April 14.
