GREENMOUNT boxer Ross Weaver is a hopeful for the Olympic Games this year, if he can win a selection event in Hobart starting next week.
Weaver (28) trains at the Forrestfield Bulls Boxing Club, along with fellow Olympic hopeful Jared Woods from Byford.
The pair will compete at the Australian Boxing Championships, each hoping to triumph in their weight division.
Weaver is a 75kg middleweight and said he would fight a bout a day in the five-day championships.
“I reckon I have got a good chance because I have gone up against a good lot of them and beaten a lot of them,” he said.
“There is every good chance (of winning), but it depends on the day.”
Weaver started boxing eight years ago at the Midland PCYC for fitness.
Currently training for nearly two hours a day in cardio and sparring, Weaver has the Olympics firmly in his sights.
If he wins in Hobart, he will have an Australian title, then compete in the Oceania Olympic qualifying event from March 20 in Canberra.
If he succeeds in the Oceania, he then heads to London.
“Generally the Australian title is the harder one to win and I’ll be pretty hopeful about the Olympics if I win this one.”
This will be Weaver’s second shot at an Australian title, after winning it in 2009.
Woods (24) will compete in the 52kg weight division, with coach Peter Scott confident he also has a good shot at an Australian title.
