DARLINGTON teenager Sasha John is proving to be a leading fencing champion with a swag of medals and titles recently awarded to the young sportsman.
John (15) has been practising the fencing discipline of Epee for six years, and fences at the Zen School of Fencing Academy in Midland.
He is the State under-15s, under-17s and under-20s Epee champion, was the national under-15s runner-up and came fifth in the national under-17s competition.
John represented WA in the national teams competition, with his team placing second in the under-15s and third in the under-17s.
He also won two silver medals in the recent State Senior Men’s Epee competition circuit.
John was introduced to the sport while attending Darlington Primary School, which ran an after-school program targeting children who were not taking part in any sport at the time.
John’s main goal is to represent Australia at the Olympic Games in 2016.
“I want to train in Italy as this is the country that produces the best fencers in the discipline of Epee,” he said.
“It would be great to live there, say for six months, and train closer to the best in the world.”
