GROMMETS will gather at Cottesloe Beach next week for a surfing competition aimed at raising indigenous awareness.
Organiser Lockie Cooke, from the Indigenous Communities Education Appeal (ICEA) Foundation, said the contest would provide a fun outdoor event for indigenous and non-indigenous youngsters aged 18 and under.
“We view surfing as one of the most spiritual sports out there,” he said.
The inaugural ICEA junior classic takes place Friday, August 20.
An after party will be held at North Cottesloe Surf Club.
ICEA, a youth-run organisation, aims to provide opportunities that will enhance the education of Aboriginal children, and help Perth’s future leaders gain understanding of Aboriginal culture, communities and issues facing indigenous youth.
