BELMAY Primary school student Justin Russell is one of many inspiring young sportspeople nominated for the 2012 HBF Junior Sports Hero Awards.

Justin (11) has cystic fibrosis, which affects his lungs, sweat glands and digestion but he never lets his condition get in the way of his sports.

Justin has been playing soccer in the goalie position since he was eight and regularly competes in little athletics.

“He has always been full of beans,” Justin’s mother Sara Lindquist said.

Justin is also pancreatic insufficient, and takes up to 30 tablets a day for his condition.

He recently competed in a beach volleyball competition at Scarborough beach that his team won.

Ms Lindquist said the only event that she does not let Justin compete in is the 1500m as he runs out of breath towards the end.

“But keeping him active in sport actually helps his lungs stay expanded.”

The 2012 HBF Junior Sports Hero Awards recognise inspiring young people who encourage others to take part in sport.

A $1000 first prize and a $500 runner-up prize will be awarded to each of the four categories across the North and South divisions.
