HBF JUNIOR SPORTS HEROES NOMINEE - By Mark Donaldson, Wanneroo Times
OCEAN Reef’s Danny Jones has proved to be an exciting junior soccer prospect on and off the field.
The 11-year-old right-winger has already been scouted by 2011-12 English Premier League side the Wolverhampton Wanderers and trialled for six weeks with them in the UK last year.
“It was a great experience,” Jones said.
He has shared his love of soccer with his classmates at Beaumaris Primary School, organising a school soccer squad.
The side, coached by Jones’ father Nige, recently won the North East Lightning Soccer Carnival.
Jones Snr said his son loved keeping active through sport.
“Sport has been a vehicle for him to forge strong friendships which he values more than anything,” he said.
WA scouts took notice of Jones this year and selected him for the state 12s team to play at the national schools championships in September.
His local team Sorrento remains unbeaten in the Football West 12s Premier League.
Jones was confident the side would go all the way.
“I think we’ll keep it up,” he said.
An all-round sportsman, Jones is also a regular medallist at Joondalup Little Athletics Club.
