FEES for managing waste will increase from tomorrow, with Mindarie Regional Council members tipped to pay an extra $13.50 per tonne.
Last week, the council endorsed the increase in gate fees to $136.50 from $123 a tonne for member councils, while non-members, such as businesses or individuals, will pay $166.54 from July 13, up from $154.
“The majority of that increase is coming from the carbon price (but) we’ve reduced the liabilities considerably,” MRC chief executive Brian Callander said.
The actual carbon price was $23, but MRC reduced it to $7.40 by capturing gas from landfill to generate electricity, he said, thus reducing carbon emissions.
For member councils including the cities of Joondalup and Wanneroo, only $4.33 related to the carbon price, according to the report to council on July 5.
This was because the Neerabup resource recovery facility reduced the amount of their waste ending up in landfill by turning it into compost.
The remainder of the increase for non-members equal to $4 a tonne and 2.9 per cent of the total fee was a result of inflation.
