Warning signs on cat-free zones

TRESPASSING cats could be trapped and their owners hit with more than $200 in fines if the animals are caught wandering in proposed cat-free zones in Ellenbrook.

Last week the Advocate reported the City of Swan earmarked Morning Park, Moulton Wetland Park and Woodlake Park to be cat-free zones – a decision that had overwhelming community support.

A City of Swan spokeswoman said the City would be erecting warning signs to cat owners.

“These areas are habitat for native birds and animals, so cat owners are encouraged to keep their cats within their own properties,” she said.

“Designating a reserve as cat prohibited allows the City to impound cats which are found there.

“Through discussions with the Ellenbrook Landscaping Committee, cat traps would be placed in the area at times when City staff or committee members can monitor the traps.

“The City will not be setting traps and leaving them unmonitored.”

She said the City would try to contact any cat owner whose pet is caught.

“Any cats which are caught would be treated in the same way as impounded cats,” she said.

“If the cat is wearing identification, attempts would be made to return it to its owner but should subsequent offences occur or no identification is worn, the cat would be taken to the City’s Pound facility.

“Under the City’s local laws, a modified penalty of $100 could be issued.

“The costs to the cat owner for the release of an impounded cat would be a $100 impoundment fee and $15 per day for sustenance.”

The move is supported by cat refuge organisation Cat Haven.

Cats should be kept in doors, full stop.

Let's not get started on what is a native animal to Australia, and calling cats vermin. Yes, cats were imported here, but so were dogs (even dingoes are not native), most members of the rodent family, and all stock animals (cows, pigs, sheep, horses). I would suggest that if you are a meat eater, you consider choosing the word "vermin" very carefully. Otherwise, you pretty much eat vermin.

I agree with Shadow - animals, no matter their species, were here on this planet first. We are the ones that destroy wildlife to build our homes, transportation routes, etc. And actually, cars hit more kangaroos and kill them than cats "destroy", so what now?

I'm all for responsible pet ownership - take care of your animals as you would any other family member to make up for the terrible invasion we have incurred on this land.

I have a question,Are cats native to Australia or an imported animal,if they are imported then they are vermin, same as rabbits ect,Dog owners must (a) register their pet(b)clean up after it,& keep it on a leash in public (c) are subject to noise control (Dogs barking at night)If my dog roams,it causes a nuisance to others,I must control it,Why then should cat owners think they should not have to control their pets, unless it because Dogs have masters,Cats have slave's.

after watching the news and seeing the damage that has been done by the fires that some idiot has lit on purpose I think really something should be done about the damage that the humans are doing don't you Dragon...

The earthmoving equipment that blew appart the native animals natural habitat before you all moved into your lovely homes did more damage to these animals environment than any domestic cat could EVER do...pathetic wannabe politicians exercising ridiculous powers that the people of that region should NEVER have given them....wake up people...domestic cats do very little damage to the environment....PEOPLE DO!

The problem is Jackie that both cat & dog owners aren't always gifted with common sense, or especially courtesy. If they were we wouldn't have to pass laws to protect the wildlife & environment.
Liz has the right of it, if you want a pet cat keep it in a run in you own garden & away from the rest of us. We don't let exotic birds fly around, we cage them to protect the native species, so why should cats have the run of the place? If you want a dog, keep the damned thing quite, take it for walks & socialise it so it doesn't bother the neighbors.
It's not a lot to ask that pet owners take responsibility for their animals.
The emotive use of a cute kitten in the paper & this article frankly does little but try to inflame the debate. Most feral cats are not cute fluffy kittens, they are killers by nature & if cats are caught wandering they should be put down...end of story. Take responsibility for it...or loose it.

Instead of zoning for cats why not zone for the Hoons that keep people awake at night and fine them $100 00. Cats can not read but Hoons can.

So what about the cats that haven't learnt how to read yet........
And how come only Morning Park, Moulton Wetland Park and Woodlake Park is going to be the only cat free zone...
I suppose the wildlife can read and they all know that this is going to be the no go zone..
More laws made when again it takes just common sense.
People nead to take responsibility.
Look after your pets

I quite agree, Liz!

Fantastic start!
Now all we need to do is get all the local councils and shires to implement laws that cats are to be kept under some form of control (indoors or in an enclosure/cat run) once the sun goes down at a minimum, though it would be better for cats to be protected from violence/cars and the wildlife is protected from the cats 24/7!
