THE world's biggest ocean liner - the Queen Mary 2 - docked in Fremantle yesterday.

Irene Hall and Joan Orrum were among those to greet what is arguably the world's most prestigious cruise ship.

It is the third time the 151,400 tonne liner, which boasts 10 restaurants, five pools, a planetarium,  ballroom and library, has visited WA.

Maritime historian and author Chris Frame said it was always special when a Cunard liner visited WA.

"QM2 remains the largest passenger ship to visit our shore," Mr Frame said.

"Her owner, the Cunard Line, has over 170 years of heritage, much of it connected with Australia.

"Liners such as the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were seen off our coast during World War II to transport troops to the Middle East and the Cunard-White Star liner Georgic was instrumental in immigration to Australia in the late 1940s and early 1950s."

Mr Frame said the recently retired QE2 was popular with Australian guests and this popularity had continued with the QM2.

Arriving from Mauritus, the QM2 will leave for Adelaide this afternoon.
