PLANS to build a Telstra tower in Cheltenham Street in West Swan have been abandoned by the applicant.

On Tuesday, November 24, last year, the Eastern Reporter reported the concerns of local resident John Balch about the proposal.

Mr Balch was worried about potential health issues to nearby residents caused by the mobile tower, as well as the reduction of land value in the area.

In an effort to stop the development, Mr Balch gathered a petition of nearby residents against the plans.

He also met West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti late last year over the issue.

Ms Saffioti praised Mr Balch for raising the issue and working to prevent the tower development.

“While infrastructure like phone towers are a necessary part of life, care needs to be taken as to where they are located,” she said.

we are fighting a similar battle here in Hervey Bay, Council have rejected a 50m tower from within 100m of residents due to high risk development issues but now Optus have logged an appeal in the Land and environment court. Optus should accept the councils judgement and relocate to a more suitable area.

Hi, Congrats. They CAN be beaten. Optus wanted to stick a 55metre Tower just 50 metres from our Glenreagh NSW home in 2008 at We were successful in having the DA Denied. Now in 2010 no such result as the Clarence Valley Council voted to accept the DA for a 25 Meter Tower less than 600 metres from our main road and the site is opposite a future housing subdivion - which Council approved in 2009. They should not be built near peoples homes, Schools, Hospitals, Aged Care Facilities etc. The Carriers DO NOT care as this is evident by the way they just submit a DA with Council and do not even consult with the Community that it will be affecting. Interesting to note that under the ACIF (C654) it states that carriers should Consult with the Community. This just DOES NOT happe unless they are forced into it. Telco Towers they claim are for the benifit of the people (there is no mention in the propagands about the real reason and that is quite simply for the Carriers to make more MONEY! ).Steve

Well Done West Swan residents - similar battles are being fought across the country - including here in Bardon Qld - as we attempt to stop a tower going up near our local school - it is about time we all got together to change the outdated 1997 legislation that currently allows towers to go up ANYwhere !!!! Our website is: www.notowersnearschools.com - together we can hopefully make a change!
