STAFF, patients and visitors of Royal Perth Hospital have grown used to noise over the past 10 years, caused by a helicopter bringing seriously ill patients to Royal Perth Hospital.

The helipad, above the operating theatres and intensive care unit and with a connecting passageway to the emergency department, was officially celebrated after the 10 years of service last Friday.

RPH executive director Geraldine Carlton said many lives had been saved as a result of the rescue chopper service being able to land at RPH.

“It gives patients across the State immediate access to world-class treatment,” Ms Carlton said.

“The ability of the emergency rescue chopper service to land at the State Trauma Centre’s doors only adds to the odds of a highly successful outcome for patients.”

Head of surgery and trauma at RPH, Dr Sudhakar Rao,  said the chopper service was an integral part of caring for the seriously ill patients his experienced team treated.
