THE Department of Environment and Conservation has widened its investigation into the death of seven corellas at a Greenwood Park to other sites.

A spokeswoman said similar deaths in several other northern suburbs had prompted the DEC to widen its testing for the cause.

“We are looking at other links to corella deaths in surrounding areas. The birds are of the same species. Testing could take a month.”

Greenwood residents suspected poisoning when they found the dead birds in one area of Blackall Park early on June 30.

Residents have also reported bird deaths at Carine Open Space and at Carine Glades Shopping Centre.

These unfortunate birds are the victims of culling by the relevant authorities due to the tag of pest/introduced species. We are told they are a threat to our native flora and fauna. It seems suspicious that the corellas are the only birds dying. At least 30 birds have died between the two known sites. So taking a month to find what killed them will give us all time to forget about it and care even less about the possibility that someone either deliberately or negligently caused the death and undue suffering to an animal. If this was a case involving domestic animals it would be investigated and charges laid.Pity wildlife is not afforded the same right.
