Irvine ‘Hutch’ Hutchison celebrates his birthday in style. Irvine ‘Hutch’ Hutchison celebrates his birthday in style.

FLYING a helicopter on a regular basis and getting into a tank with crocodiles seem like impressive achievements for the average person, but 102-year-old Irvine “Hutch” Hutchison is not an average person.

The Bethanie resident celebrated his 102nd birthday on Friday, May 18 by taking a joyride in a Robinson 2-seater helicopter.

Hutch, who celebrated his 97th birthday by being lowered in an enclosure into a tank of crocodiles at a wildlife park in Darwin, said he attributed his longevity to keeping everything in moderation and caring for others.

Remembering his wife Enid, who died six years ago, he said: “We had 67 wonderful years together and when she passed away she told me not to become stagnate so I have not.

“I just like to do things and challenge myself and the whole flying thing fascinates me, I love it. I also believe being around older folk and even looking after some keeps me young.”

Hutch, who has lived at Bethanie for 37 years, often co-ordinates community activities, has taught himself how to use a computer and makes sure he gets out and about on Fridays.

But he lists his greatest achievement as keeping people happy.

“Nowadays I think there is a genuine lack of tolerance for others,” he said.

“I’ve been so contented and happy and I think that has contributed to living longer. I also try to look after myself by exercising both my body and brain, but I definitely think the man upstairs is keeping an eye on me.

“I like to live by the motto of remember yesterday, dream about tomorrow but live for today. I try to keep to that.”

Friends, family and staff had a party in his honour at Bethanie Joondanna.

I am a friend of Hutch and the article was great but you incorrectly stated he went on a joyride for his birthday ,Hutch flies the helicopter himself and has done so every six weeks since 2005 with an instructor from Heliwest by his side . I think this makes this remarkable man even more remarkable and gives your story a better punchline. Thankyou.
