A FREMANTLE nightclub owner who has spent more than a year fighting for a secure taxi rank in Fremantle has succeeded, with the Federal Government putting forward funding for the project.

The city has received $115,423 as part of the Safer Suburbs program. The taxi rank will be located at the western end of Henderson Street Mall.

The push for the secure taxi stand was initiated by Metropolis Nightclub owner David Heaton, who noticed several issues relating to a lack of transport on Friday and Saturday nights and developed a plan to attract more taxis into Fremantle.

He said as the second largest city in WA with a big hospitality and social scene, there was a significant need and demand for an improved taxi presence.

“The lack of transport services available to people in Fremantle has been a concern shared by the local community for quite some time now,” he said.

“On a typical Saturday night, you will see queues starting from around 10pm and an average wait can often be more than two hours.

“People are spending a large portion of their evening waiting around feeling frustrated and bored which is when we are more likely to see unsociable behaviour.

“A secure rank will attract more taxis to Fremantle, increase frequency to the area, decrease passenger waiting times and ensure the safety of taxi drivers and the wider community.”

The City of Fremantle developed a Working Group Committee in 2011 to develop ways that would improve safety and accessibility to public transport and taxis and made a secure taxi rank a priority.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said: “It will be safer and better located away from the bus stop and closer to public toilets.”

Taxi Council of WA chief executive Olwyn Williams said the taxi industry still needed to be persuaded that the location was a workable proposal, outlining ease of access, security and safety for taxis and passengers as three key elements.

Where exactly is this new taxi rank.. why do you show a map on where it is? When I go to freo its the violent people that cause the trouble thats why taxis stick to the city. How about a permanent police presence there also

David, thank you. This is huge for all Freo patrons who are sick of not being able to cab home.
If only there were more people like you who got the bigger picture, Freo could be amazing.
Thank you.
