Muslim prayer hall could still get council support

Comments:

IN a surprise move, City of Gosnells councillors are rallying to support plans for a public Muslim prayer hall in Thornlie.

The Australian Islamic College's Thornlie campus wants its school hall approved for public worship but the council has opposed these plans because of traffic concerns.

Last night, the City announced Cr Julie Brown's bid to overturn the council's decision from July 24, when councillors voted 5-4 against the prayer hall.

The rescission motion was also signed by councillors Ron Mitchell, Liz Griffiths, Russell Lawrence and Glen Dewhurst. Cr Susan Iwanyk later provided
written support.

Cr Griffiths and Cr Iwanyk were not at the July 24 meeting and a third councillor, Cr Ron Hoffman, was on leave.

The rescission motion will be discussed at Tuesday's council meeting.
