THE BOSNIAN Islamic Society of Perth is a step closer to starting construction on its planned Caversham Mosque, with Indigenous Affairs Minister Peter Collier granting permission to use the land.
Mr Collier granted the society conditional permission to use the land under Section 18 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act.
The applicant, acting on behalf of BISP, will be required to record and report, in consultation with Aboriginal consultants and an archaeologist, the discovery of any Aboriginal cultural material.
If found to be highly significant, the material must be salvaged and stored in accordance with best practice, and the applicant must provide a written report within 60 days of completion, advising to what extent the construction of the mosque has affected sites on the land.
The society is now awaiting finalisation of a Certificate of Design Compliance from the City of Swan before beginning construction.
President Sajit Smajic said the society had hoped to lay the cornerstone of the mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which started on July 21.
However, that had not been possible because the City had requested more detailed plans before granting the certificate.
