A MAN has been charged over a Rockingham service station robbery on Monday morning in which the offender was belted with his own weapon.

Detectives from the Regional Investigation Unit charged the 18-year-old, who was arrested in Augusta following several calls from the public to Crime Stoppers.

Police alleged the man approached a 22-year-old attendant in the service station’s forecourt brandishing a metal pipe before ushering him back inside the store and demanding money.

The man was given a sum of money and cigarettes before leaving the store.

As he was leaving, he became involved in a struggle with the attendant, who managed to disarm him and strike him several times with the weapon as he fled.

The Waikiki man has been charged with armed robbery, deprivation of liberty and threats to kill.

He will appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court today.
