WORK on community facilities to improve public amenity and access to the Leighton beachfront will start next week.
Planning Minister John Day said stage one works of the landscape master plan, including construction of a picnic area, cycle path, barbecues and a car park would start next Monday.
“This marks the beginning of what will be a significant beachfront proposal that will enhance the currently disused railway marshalling yards and provide regional public and beachfront recreation areas,” he said.
“The creation of a new foreshore park will improve access between the coastal urban village and the beach, and increase the existing coastal reserve, resulting in both community and environmental benefits.”
Construction should take about six months to complete.
Mirvac and Multiplex will start work on two other major developments at the same time.
Pedestrian and traffic management plans will be put in place to minimise inconvenience to the public.
