MOBILE surveillance technology developed by Curtin University experts has proved its worth in keeping students, staff and visitors safe after just a few months in operation.

Virtual Observer is a mobile surveillance system mounted on vehicles that can capture 360-degree vision at different locations for added security.

Vehicles are fitted with cameras and specialist data recording equipment developed by co-creator Digital Technology International, to create a mobile camera network.

Professor of computer science Svetha Venkatesh, who helped develop the system along with Dr Stewart Greenhill, said the use of global positioning system (GPS) technology and time-stamping of footage provided significant time-saving benefits and greater coverage than traditional static surveillance and closed circuit television systems.

“We can pinpoint a location on a campus map and access instant footage available at that time from any vehicle that has been past that location,” Prof Venkatesh said.
