DONATIONS to the Red Cross Blood Service have gone down since February and at the beginning of this month, the service had less than two days’ supply.

After a bad experience last week, a Mandurah man says this is because the service makes it “too hard” for the average person to give blood.

Steven Harrop was booked in to give blood at 11.45am last Friday.

Mr Harrop claims that when he arrived they were fully booked and were not able to see him.

“I got upset and I didn’t want to do it anymore, so I cancelled the appointment,” he said.

Mr Harrop’s blood type is O-negative and there is always a need for this type of blood.

“They are chasing this type of blood, it is hard to find people to donate this blood type,” he said.

Currently the Red Cross Mobile Blood Bank comes to Mandurah around once a month, but Mr Harrop thinks there should be a permanent blood donation service available to locals.

“People are inquiring and they are told that the Red Cross are only here today,” he said.

“They just make it so hard to do it, surely they can make it easier to give blood.”

Mr Harrop said he does not know if he would be willing to make another appointment.

“I just want to do the right thing and it’s just taking too long,” he said. “If I was at work today I’d be buggered and wouldn’t be able to come in at all.

“They say they are desperate for blood, so get it happening.”

A Red Cross Blood Service spokesperson said they had no plans to alter the service.

On their website, people are asked to allow 60-minutes from the time they arrive until they leave.

Mandurah is a fast groing "city" and still there are no regular facilities to donate blood. If there is such a shortage then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT

It is difficult sometimes to get an appointment that is convenient....best way around this is to make the next appointment when you donate. I find the staff at Fremantle lovely and always very grateful that you have taken time out of your schedule to donate to such a worthy and necessary cause.

I donate at the Morley branch and they always make me feel very welcome and that my common O+ is like liquid gold.

Red Cross only has so many staff and they work really hard. Please think of them. Also you can jump on a train in Mandurah and go straight through to Perth to go to the main blood bank. They always treat you well and will welcome you. Be prepared for a wait, don't be so impatient. Think of the people who need the blood.

Both my husband and I no longer give blood regularly, (near on ten years now) as we find it impossible to get an appointment that fits in with our work commitments and spontaneous dropping in is a big no, no.

Yes it is hard to give blood nowadays, after giving over a 100 donations I stopped for a couple of years, when I reapplied to give again they knocked both myself & my wife as we had turned 70 !!!!!!

I agree with Steve Harrop. I have seen the mobile vans a few times at the Southland shopping centre and have been turned away many times. Once I thought on the way in to the shops I would give blood, I am 'A Negative'. I was asked if I had an appointment and said "no" - and despite there being no-one there I was turned away and on another occasion - I knocked on the door and they said they were getting ready to close and there was no time. Don't tell me they are desperate for blood donations. If they really wanted it, they would say "Take a seat - someone will be with you shortly". I've given up.

I would be only too happy to donate blood if the red cross visited shopping centers more often. I have offered to donate several times through various clubs but have never been called by Red Cross. I am O- but will not go to Ftle or Perth due to parking problems. Perhaps they do not have the staff required to operate an efficient service. I offered to donate when the caravan was at Southlands but they couldn't fit me in.

As I have spent more than 6 months in the UK from 1980 to 1996 I am unable to give. I arrived here in 1989. Also this is probably true 4 most of the Australian population. So even though it is a good idea 2 donate, the Red Cross should stop complaining about lack of supply when this applies.

I too was turned away and it was after a big advertising campaign that I drove into the city to give blood and was told I couldn't do it that day. I spent the drive in trying to overcome my nerves. I realise now that there are only so many staff and chairs available but I have never bothered to go back again. I didn't get any warm fuzzies from the office staff either. It is a community obligation to give blood and I must try again.

I am a common-as-muck O+ donor and am treated like royalty each quarter that I donated blood (in Morley, Wellington st, Derby over the years, but admittedly not at a mobile clinic in Mandurah).
Donating blood is something I see as being a community/social obligation to my fellow Men, for which I quite understand that I cannot 'breeze in and breeze out' every time (try my local medical practice if you "really" want to experience inordinate waiting times after making an appointment!)

Hmm! If Mandurah people are turning up in too greater numbers for a one-day-a-month service - and they are short of blood - surely a twice-monthly service could be arranged?

It is not only Mandurah, I tried to make an appointment at the Carousel
Cannington Branch a week in advance but was told they could not fit me in and it was the only day I could donate. Something needs to be done for the donor that can just walk in when they have a spare hour or stop making the public feel guilty when we are trying to donate.

I'm sure there is another side to this story ... I've given blood for years and they are always polite and accomodating.

Such a shame to turn willing blood donors away when they are so hard to come by. The Red Cross needs to treat blood donors properly so they can hang on to them, and make it mpore attractive for new donors to come along.
