TIME is not on Chantelle Fuimaono’s side but generous friends and strangers are making sure she has as much as possible with her precious family.
The Heathridge woman was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 cervical cancer last September and is having chemotherapy to give her extra time with husband Prince and their four children aged 12, six, three and one.
Turning an unusable back yard into a family-friendly outdoor living area was on the couple’s “to do” list once they had reduced their mortgage.
However, such projects went on the backburner after Chantelle’s diagnosis.
Aware of what they had wanted to do, good friend Adrian Linklater, of Wangara’s Bravo Hire, mobilised friends and businesses for a surprise “backyard blitz”.
With the unsuspecting family on a donated weekend in Yallingup, volunteers moved in to level and beautify the back garden with paving, decking, fencing, shade sails, trees and plants, lighting, a swing set, outdoor setting and above-ground pool.
“We were overwhelmed when we came home,” said Chantelle (36), whose father Raymond has come from New Zealand to help the family.
“Even a week after it was done, it still didn’t feel like our house.
“We are really thankful to everyone for their generosity.
“It’s hard to put into words, but thank you ... to everyone who turned out; many were strangers who we didn’t know but we are so appreciative.”
Adrian said he was delighted with the response to his appeal for help.
“I am still overwhelmed that there are so many caring and thoughtful people and companies around that are generous enough to help out when something like this is being arranged,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chantelle’s “playgroup friend” Emma Firth will run the Kep Ultra Marathon from Northam to Mundaring Weir on June 3 to raise money for the family.
The Beldon woman hopes to complete 100km, having run 75km in 2010.
“I am seeking sponsors to donate so we can help Chantelle and Prince with holidays and family things, to give them everything they can have with their kids,” she said.
