PREMIER Colin Barnett has indicated his support for a new council made up of Cottesloe, Claremont, Mosman Park and Peppermint Grove, known as the G4.
“If those four municipalities came together to form a new local authority, and there could be a transition period to do that, in my view the Government, probably a government of either political persuasion, would say that’s a good outcome and accept it,” Mr Barnett said.
The councils will be eradicated if the State Government agrees to any of the three options in the draft Metropolitan Local Government Review.
The options are a sole metropolitan council, an expanded City of Perth with up to five others across the city or 10-12 mega-councils.
The councils fear any new authority could still be merged into a mega-council after the review.
Mr Barnett gave only his personal support to a G4 staying independent.
“I can’t commit any future government but all I can say as current Premier, and as local member, is ‘that would do me’,” he said.
Mosman Park Mayor Ron Norris wanted greater commitment.
“Mr Barnett needs to give clear guidance that the proposal would be supported,” he said.
The Government will get the final review, with reasons for change and suggested new boundaries, on June 30.
