The new fixed Kwinana freeway speed camera in Como has only been in operation from July 12, but it has already made an impact on motorists.

In the 31 days after July 12, 3597 speeding traffic infringement notices were detected by the fixed speed camera.

From this, 2620 of the motorists were not exceeding the speed limit by more than 9km/h, while eight motorists were caught driving in excess of 41km/h over the limit.

These statistics are provisional and subject to revision – and statistics may include infringements that are or will be withdrawn or cancelled.

The totals only represent Original Notices issued per incident – and do not include either subsequent Renominated or Reissued Notices.

Neither Bored, it's the speeding driver that raises the money to pay the fine. Not the cameras or roadside patrols that would obviously not be safe to have them parked where that camera is. If you know where a driver is going to be speeding or a crime is going to be comited let the Police know in advance... so they can be waiting... they can not be everywhere else at the same time can they.

Remove number plates, problem solved. Why, you ask? Because clearly the police are relying on cameras to catch "criminals" instead of more roadside patrols which would actually do something to "deter" crimes. Guess which one makes the Government more money?

Well how many lives / accidents occurred in this spot prior to camera being installed? If there are barely any, I don't see the reason why the camera is there. A camera ain't going to save my life, though my driving skills and awareness probably will help reduce the chances. If people could learn to drive, cross the road properly etc we'd probably have 130kmph speed limits on our freeways and maintain the old 60kmph standard.

Altering the limit will not work. If its 90km/h people will do 100km/h, if its 100km/h, people will do 110km/h. That stretch of road is a joke. Perth needs to embrace fly-overs otherwise it will all get progressively worse. People may not be dying but there are a lot of minor to medium impact collisions there and you don't have to be traveling fast to hurt someone. Just because they didn't die doesn't make it okay.

Wow Randall, Slowdown your typing there a bit, your raceing ahead of your thoughts. It was your gazza that mistakingly said "make it 90" :) BUT Yes, look what happens when the rate of flow is greater than the exits can take. Bottleneck gridlock occurs turning freeways into parkingways. Reducing the infeed speeds gives extra time for the traffic to clear ahead instead of it catching up to the back of the pack.

So Stanley, your solution to the problem of a minority of people exceeding the speed limit on a stretch of road is to slow down the rest of the people who obey the speed limit so that the demographic of speeders will still be speeding through the zone but potentially at 10mk/h lower than before, provided they are choosing their speed based upon a sign and not upon how fast they feel like driving? Come on mate, raise the bar a bit.

I wonder how many fatal aor serious accidents has happend in this particular zone where the camera is situated. I bet that the Police/Main Roads will not tell you. This is just another way to add monies to the Govt. coffers with no appreciable result to the other motorists. Just the poor old motorists getting flogged again by a cynical Govt. using the road toll to get more money.

Goodone gazza, if they are overspeeding in the 100 zone it shows the LIMIT should be, Reduced, to 90 for the safety of other drivers. I suspect it is also in an area where vehicles in the left lane are reducing speed to take one of several exits along there.

Personally I'm amazed people actually managed to get up to such speeds in the section...

Surely if Marmion Ave to the north can be set safely at 80, with residential areas close by, then the freeway, totally enclosed by fencing , could easily be 90 .

It clearly didn't slow anyone down, it just lightened their pocket. It does show that the bulk of motorists were comfortable travelling at 9 km's over the limit, which I think is an 80 km zone. Maybe this is what the camera can be used for... to ascertain the safest speed for a road. Should this section be 90 perhaps?

How many lives were saved is something we will never know Because the accidents were prevented from happening by slowing the Speeding Hoons down to a safer speed where it is less likely for them to cause Other Inocent People to crash.
