LOCAL aged care services have received a boost after the opening of the Janet Elder House building in Manning.

Last week, Southcare, which provides support for disadvantaged families in the South Perth area, launched its new $1.2 million building.

It will function as Southcare’s new aged care and administration facility and is located opposite its existing premises in Bickley Crescent.

Lotterywest and the Federal and State Governments provided funding.

Southcare chief executive Graham Hope said the facility would ensure continuing support.

“The building helps expand our facilities and will focus on extended age care at home (EACH), fostering and linking assessment services. “It has been about 10 years in conception and is a major development for the area.”

The building honours the late Dr Janet Elder, who made a generous bequest and was a long time volunteer with Southcare.

“Janet was a thoracic surgeon and was in charge of the department of respiratory medicine at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital at the time of her retirement,” Mr Hope said. “She had a driving concern for the welfare of others and volunteered a lot of her time.”

South Perth MLA John McGrath said the facility was important for the community.

“I congratulate the many hundreds of volunteers who over those years have devoted their time and effort into providing support for those who are less fortunate,” he said.
