MUMS face so much pressure they shouldn’t have to worry about using environmentally-unsafe nappies on top of all their other daily stresses, says Perth businesswoman and mother-of-two Naomi Putland.
Doing her bit for the environment and helping mums avoid the guilt of using mainstream disposables – which, she discovered, contributed a massive amount to landfill and take about 300 years to break down – Naomi opened her second business, The Nappy Tree.
In her new role – while juggling the Country Road cafe, Perth, which she opened 12 years ago, as well as the kids – Naomi is the WA distributor of German-made Moltex Eco biodegradable, disposable nappies, which break down in ordinary backyard compost heaps.
“The WA distributorship – delivering nappies to suburbs across Perth – was set up about six years ago by a like-minded woman looking for a greener solution,” she said.
“These nappies are the best on the market and using them ticks all the boxes – it’s convenience without the guilt. Everyone tries to do the right thing these days but I think it’s really important to take that next step with nappies, because we all have to use them at some point.”
Naomi said taking on a second business was stressful at times, but The Nappy Tree – offering the only nappy on the Australian market to win the Good Environmental Choice Award – was worth the extra juggle.
“The kids are part of the company and I think it’s really important to teach them about what I’m trying to do,” she said.
“I try very hard to do my bit for the environment. We have just one vehicle and live close to the city so we can walk and ride everyway.”
Delivery is free to the metropolitan area and a small fee is required for outside suburbs.
