Simple solution to gay marriage issue

ALL these arguments about gay marriage have one side claiming the polls say most of the Australian public support gay marriage and the other side saying it’s all in the way the question is asked and who is asked.

I have a simple way of fixing the argument. During the next Federal Election hold a referendum on the issue.

Then if the gay community is right it will get what it wants, but if the church is right it will get what it wants and once and for all we will have the answer as to how Australians really feel about gay marriage.

Simple really and no one could argue with the result.

Rohan I am not sure where you are coming from you obviosly don't think the community is mature enough to nake a decission on this issue yet you want to put it in the hands of a few politicians where one side has already directed its members to vote against it. If the polls are correct then the Liberal party will be forced to support the decision. with regard to Dave and Ben exactly my point if the hold a refferendum all the people you mention will be able to vote the way they want. In regard to giving the community a vote on a minority rights Rohan you talk about what would have happened if the americans had the right to vote on slavery I dont know the answer but I do know when australians were asked to support the aboriginal right to vote at a refferendum we were mature enough to make the right decision. not so sure that would have been the case if we left it to the parliament at the time to make the decision.Just for the record I would support gay marriage in a refferendum.

What an absurd suggestion. Putting minority rights up to a vote is a terrible idea. Do you think, if they had let Americans vote on emancipation of the slaves, that a majority would have voted yes at the time? Of course not. Changes in public opinion tend to follow rather than precede changes in legislation.

It's obvious from your suggestion that you have no vested interest in gay marriage. Whichever way the law goes, you won't be affected by it. And you have decided, since you won't be affected, just let everyone vote as you don't care either way.

Well, some people do care. Even people who won't be directly affected by legalising gay marriage. They care because they value justice and equality.

I look forward with excitement to a time when the bigotted troglodytes who are currently spreading fear and misinformation about gay marriage will seen by their children and grand-children as the embarrassing rednecks they are.

The real simple solution is: legalise gay marriage.

When me and my husband get introduced we get called by our first name?
I have never been introduced by Mr and Mrs except when I was doing canteen duty at my daughters primary school 10 years ago???? Don't think it really would be an issue.

When married how does one indroduce a couple --Meet Mr. and Mr. Smith or Mr. and Mr. Jones ---Who comes first ---and the same with Mrs. and Mrs. Jones or Smith. Also what would happen in a divorce ?---Interesting !
