Olympic spirit more than medals

I AM feeling a little disheartened by the lack of compassion and respect shown towards our Olympic team.

The discussions and write-ups over the past days in the media have not been anything near the true meaning of what the Olympics are about.

The Olympic spirit is about the world coming together in unity and love for each other in order to uplift a very challenging world as it is at the moment.

It is not about the amount of medals we win; it is about the friendships that are formed and the relationships between other countries becoming stronger.

I have the greatest respect for the contributions the team has made in 2012 to continue to establish Australia as a nation of multicultural diversity and compassion.

I truly wish that we as a nation can learn by our actions and words towards our athletes and welcome them home with the open arms of a nation who are proud of them all.

I've just read the morethangold.org.uk site and maybe this could become a feature in Australia.

Frankly I'm alarmed by media commentators and disgusted the way people pick up nuances and react. Let's be a little intelligent and loving about the years of supreme effort given.
Olympic atheletes are human people not robots. Australia has had some extraordinary years. Naturally other nations of the world will have good years too. Large populations have a greater pool of athletes to compete for Olympic opportunities.
Let's be thankful that our small population produces amazing athletes from time to time.
Australia's 2012 Olympian athletes are inspiring in their discipline, training, strength and performance. Well done! And also remember that we have a vast pool of young people training and performing in sporting events all year round. Maybe some outstanding athletes have made other choices in their lives and careers. As we are seeing it takes a lot of support for Olympians to reach these heights.
