WHY do we continue to celebrate Australia Day?
I fear Australia doesn’t belong to Australians any longer, with 99 per cent of all items sold in Australia made overseas, including our own flag.

well i think theres lots to celebrate on Australia dayim proud to be part of this lucky country and of course proud to be Australianperhaps a better sense of nationhood would benefit all Australians such as no citizenship = no permanent resident:)

Does it really matter where something is made - we are just one world, and what many don't understand is that the made overseas goods and competitive wages are the only impetus to calibrate a world wide cost of living and bring everyone up from being downtrodden and others from being hoodwinked by aspirations that really can't be achieved and one surrenders their life for. In terms of flags - well for me they're the bane of humanity - they divide peoples.Gerry Georgatos
This is why we buy overseas... A 12 volt car type LED globe...from China..$1.95 plus about $3.50 postage [ and that is another winge] ...and from a ' western' manufacturer...$15 or more... Same product...but why the vast difference in price... Seems our manufacturers are simply greedy.

The problem is you demand higher wages and cost of living goes up and up. Then retailers go offshore to find a cheaper made product. When they can't find one they then start their own manufacturing in a third world country and import the product. We still keep demanding higher wages and so the vicious circle continues. Until such time as we reign in these stupid demands we will continue to lose our independence and our manufacturing will all disappear overseas. Take Bond's clothing as an example. Unions destroyed the whole clothing industry here. The car industry is next.
"Made in China"" you see it everywhere on everything these days!!
The problem is twofold 1) the retailers who purchase cheaper foreign products and are then able to charge cheaper prices to Australian society, 2) by society who accept this damaging behaviour. Both create a negative culture whereby Australian manufacturers are unable to compete on price and the whole market spirals downwards. Society should only buy Australian made and by doing so assist Australian manufacturers to produce more... this eventually creates economies of scale and so prices over time will or at least should, reduce to an acceptable level. It is no good society winging about Australian made products costing more when it is they who have the power to do something about it. The answer is very simple.... don't buy foreign made goods and evidence to Australian manufacturers that there is a viable market within Australia who are prepared to pay a little more for what one hopes is a better quality made product... create the confidence and manufacturers will respond.
