Sharon Cooke, Councillor, Hamersley Ward, City of Stirling
I AM at a loss to understand how developers can disturb asbestos in our residential suburb of Gwelup.
If North Beach Investments knew of the machinery error in 2004 and resultant soil contamination with asbestos-containing material, why weren’t the site workers and the public made aware?
The Erindale Grove subdivision site report states that asbestos-containing material was found on the site and is a risk to human health if disturbed.
I don’t believe half a metre of clean fill covering a geo-textile warning barrier is enough.
The potential health risk and financial burden of living with this remedy is a millstone for future residents and all the ratepayers of the City of Stirling.
Listen to the people; let’s not set a precedent for unsafe, unworkable land releases in Perth.
Last week the City of Stirling council unanimously stood against recommending this subdivision approval.
As a Gwelup resident and local ward councillor, I appeal to the State Government to take a closer look into this issue, and I respectfully ask the Western Australian Planning Commission to refuse clearance of this subdivision.
The lack of regard for the local community is unconscionable.
