‘Ellenbronx’ no joke

THE number of robberies and home invasions has ceased to be a joke in Ellenbrook.

It does not make sense: it’s like a ghost town most of the time with nobody on the streets, but for some reason so many homes are being invaded and good, hard-working people and pensioners robbed.

It’s not the money, bank cards, driving licences that matter, it’s our privacy and sentimental possessions that were taken such as photos and presents from relatives and/or friends who are no longer with us.

I had a home invasion on Thursday, March 25 and just one night last week I was thinking about a present I’d received for my 60th birthday that I carried around in my handbag that was stolen.

It was tiny set of bagpipes than could be hung in the car and so forth. I would be walking around with this tiny gift in my handbag and sometimes if they moved in my bag the tune Scotland the Brave would be played.

It reminded me of Scotland and of the people who sent it for my birthday. To me it meant so much but to the thieves who stole my bag it would have meant nothing.

The money in my purse would have meant so much to them: lots of beer or wine when for the rest of the week I had to struggle to buy my shopping.

I could curse and swear: I won’t but at times when I’m on my own I do get so angry because, for whatever reason, nobody is ever caught for the crimes.

How come? With so many break-ins and home invasions in our area the police have got to know or be reasonably sure who is doing it.

Yes, their hands are tied, but owing to the lack of police “on the ground” they can only do what they can.

Something needs to be done and it’s no wonder Ellenbrook has taken the name of “Ellenbronx”.

Who will want to come and live here?

Also, bored kids.... yes that is true, kids are bored out of their brains. How's that a parents fault? Maybee if Ellenbrook accommodated the growing population of kids by having more activities/place for these kids to go to, instead of having 100 retirement villages, it may be different. It should be called Ellenretirementbrook!

REALLY?

Its unfair to stereotype like that. I know kids from homeswest houses and other from rich families, let me tell you.. Its not always the kid that come from the Homeswest house...Infact in my experience as a teenager, it was more the little rich kids who caused the trouble.. I live in a block of units, and in the last 6 months 7 out of 12 have been broken into... Its becoming more and more dangerous....

Police are spread so thin over Perth.
In UK you have special constabulary - volunteer police who patrol with regulars with proper training and full powers. My dad was a special for 11 yrs serving his local village awarded police long service medal.
Why doesn't WA have something similar ? I talked to an ex minister who was a policeman and he said he tried to bring this in but got quoshed.

We have SES and volunteer fire, sea rescue - why not reserve police.
When I lived in new orleans they had reserve Police, reserve sheriff's dept (I was in one).

Its not vigilantism usually specials work WITH beat cops and free up resources.

Actually, being a 16 year old living in Ellenbrook, it's a completly different experience as many young males my age and sometimes as young as 12 can be harrassed by other teenagers, due to the fact that most of them have a notion that they are better than others, which is why I refuse to walk around ellenbrook without at least one friend because it just isn't safe for someone like myself

I am one the original home owners in Ellenbrook and I have been very fortunate to have never had a problem with crime other than some vandalism with garden lights which our whole street experienced. Ellenbrook has become so big now that it is a town within it self and if you are niave enough to think that because we llive "out in the sticks" that crime is not going to effect us,well you need to have a serious look around and realise that we are much better off than alot off suburbs. Our children have grown up or are growing up and yes there are kids who hangout and their parents either don't care or think there kid is a good kid and won't be a nuisance which in most cses is right except when they join up with their mates and get caught up with what ever. Please do not call Ellenbrook-Ellenbronx because unless you have lived in a suburb like Balga, Lockridge or a similar low income location where crime is so prevelant that your head would be spinning! Ellenbrook is not

There is crime in all suburbs. Ellenbronx? Really?
I've only lived here for 8 months and I love the community.
Empty streets? Not near me. There are always children playing, people walking their dogs. We often utilise the bike tracks around the place.

I agree with Karissa, there is a community spirit here. One I'm proud to be part of.

I have lived in Ellenbrook since the start. I remember the days when you could see more stars in the sky, here the cows mooing at night. and could leave cars unlocked, recently I have been starting to think those days are well and truely gone, crime has stepped up, but so has population we are growing whether we like it or not it is innevitable, I was in a state of mind a little while ago same as the complaintiff, until I did a job out of Ellenbrook recently and saw how bad some of the older suburbs have become, when I got back home I realised how nice Ellenbrook is again, Because Ellenbrook is separated from the rest of suburbia we tend to be blind as to how the real world is becoming, the problem with youth and crime is all over Perth and the world, I do Travel and unfortunately we have to make changes for this, It's called evolution. As for Homeswest we will never get rid of them, but they need to evict trouble makers, and free those homes for people that really need them.

While I sympathise with your loss and feel your frustration, I do agree with the first comment....there isn't anywhere in Perth where you are guaranteed not to be a victim of some type of crime, minor and sometimes major..Community is made up of people and all people have different morals.
We have lived in Ellenbrook for over 9 years and never had any problems. Ellenbrook is a beautiful place that does not claim to be perfect. The community spirt here does make it what it is. Whoever came up with the name "ellenbronx" needs to wash their mouth out.

Sensationalism

Empty streets? Which part of Ellenbrook do you live in?? I have lived here for 11 years, our streets always have people enjoying the beautiful surroundings, walking paths and parks. Of course we do have the odd problem, but we find Ellenbrook much safer than the previous suburb we lived in. Ellenbrook is a wonderful place to raise children (as we have done). I also work here, and I am involved in the community and school groups. We had a break in many years ago, and got ourselves a big dog. Never had a problem since. I hope the letter writer has improved their security since their break in, rather than wasting time sending sensationalist letters to various media. If you support your community, they will support you. BTW, never heard us being referred to as Ellenbronx.

It is not the Bronx

Seriously get over yourselves.... some people should go live in some others suburbs. Ellenbrook is not that bad. The odd break in and people think we have a crime wave. Just because we are in such a lovely area does not mean we are exempt from crime. Bored kids account for 90% of our issues........and the parents should be made responsible for what the kids are doing. Remove some of the Homeswest houses and the crap that live in them and we wouldn't have the problem. The Police can only do so much... stop moaning.... step up your security and be sensible. Ellenbrook is a beautiful place..... it has the odd crappy street and a few things that go on.... if you don't like it MOVE!! Everywhere has problems with crime... it is a fact of life.... nowhere is exempt unfortunately. What should we do put a big electric fence around the area?
