I RECENTLY became aware that the State Mines Department has issued permits for four exploratory wells to be drilled within the South West for coal seam gas production.
This is the same type of gas production that is receiving so much bad press in Queensland and the United States where there has been a moratorium placed on it until certain issues were resolved.
I asked my MP whether the State Government had any guidelines/regulations covering the activities for coal seam fracturing. The answer was no. But it was claimed the Mines Department oversaw all such activities and would ensure drillers complied (whatever that means).
It is relevant to mention the Yarragadee Aquifer, which is claimed to be a main water resource within the south-west of the State, and the danger of contamination posed to it by such drilling.
The Government is wrong in allowing such activities without any legislation to ensure the safety of our resources.
