Beware of scam

RECENTLY I almost became the victim of a computer scam that appears to be doing the rounds.

The scam involves a cold telephone call from a computer company who claim to be offering to clean up one’s computer. The name of the company was so complicated that I didn’t catch who they were.

They claimed to have information on every computer that is ever sold and that they have been asked to perform a maintenance task on these computers.

The story goes something like this. They know that your computer has lots of error messages and possible virus attacks, junk mail and so forth and they want to clean up your computer.

Obviously to do this they must gain remote access to your computer and so they offer to step you through the process to obtain your IP address.

The cold caller is very professional and convincing. Fortunately I became a little concerned and started to ask questions such as how did you get my phone number and if you have details of all computers then tell me where I bought my computer?

Both these questions received no reply.

As the conversation progressed I became more suspicious and when persisting with answers to my questions the caller realised that he had lost and put the phone down.

Incidentally my son has also received a similar phone call. He just put the phone down as he realised immediately that it was a scam.

I am 72 and fortunately do have a fair bit of computer experience, so was able to realise that the call was from a scammer.

My worry is that there are probably many senior citizens in our community who have limited computer knowledge and may be taken in by these scammers.

I have been operating computers for quite a few years now, and I also have received these scams on a regular basis. It is not only people with foreign accents, but so called Australians trying to get into these scams, by finding out about your bank details. They are very convincing, and I can assure you, Bank staff do not, I say Do not contact the customers by telephone for details they have already got. If people start to drop the phone, the instant someone tries to scam you. It might one day cese to exist. I can tell you now. many Auzzies have been scammed. You know the old saying. If it's too good to be true, it probably is. Best Wishes.

My neighbour has received the same calls and thankfully sought advice before giving out any information. These scammers are vermin. I recenlty had an email telling me a distant relative had passed in a fatal car accident and they were hoping I was the recipient of his property. As I pointed out to the scammer in an email from a blind account set up for that specific purpose. My family history has been too well researched for said individual to have slipped through the net and given that it is an extremely common name in Scotland where my supposed relative died they had not spent much time on research. Strangely they have not persisted ;)

We have also received many of these sick calls. These very sick "people" MUST be stopped once and for all. Please all you people out there NEVER give ANY information out - just hang up. The funny side of it is my mother keeps getting these calls and she hasn't even got a computer and has no idea how to even turn a computer on.

I also keep getting Landline phone calls from, 'micro-soft windows' telling me I have to pay to use their program.
I phoned micro-soft on thier 1300 number, they told me they don't ring people for anything, it is a scam.
I told them (the scammers) I don't use windows as I have a apple mac. and I use Safari.
Now each time I get a call, with an Indian accent, which I never can understand, I hang up.

If it's any consolation, we in WA are not the only ones copping this scam. the web-site below has hundreds of entries from people in all parts of the world who have been approached by cold callers with Indian accents and "very" English names.
Some have been fleeced of money to pay for bogus virus removal and protection - let alone what malicious damage might be done by allowing said persons access to your computer.

Yes, all age groups must be aware. I had two calls recently. Being a retired IT person, they didn't get far with me, I was amused. One could easily tell by the foreign accent. "Go to your computer now or are you using Windows?" This was minor part of call. BE CAREFUL. Also make sure your virus etc. protection is up to date. For private use many are FREE.

My rule is that if I didn't ask for it then it's spam / a scam / or just a rip off and MUST be ignored.
