Death masks have been used as a way of preserving the likeness of (mainly) the rich and famous for a very long time.

One of the most famous death masks is the gold and jewel likeness of Tutankhamun from Ancient Egypt.
 
They come from the practice of making a plaster mold of a person's face postmortem for use in rememberance, paintings, sculptures etc.

Death masks exist of many famous people such as Abraham Lincoln, Alfred Hitchcock, the German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche and pop culture icon James Dean, to name just a few.
