IT looks like something built in a mad scientist's backyard workshop and it's being let loose on the streets of Northbridge.

A custom-made four-person tricycle - which has become something of a roadshow fixture throughout Perth in the past 12 months with appearances at various community events - is being used to present Mega Deluxe Wheel Deal, a live mobile cooking show featuring as part of the Fringe World Festival 2012.

The concept - concocted by young Perth art collective Spatula (a foursome of visual arts university graduates) - will see the offbeat pedal-powered trike wander throughout the downtown entertainment precinct, gathering ingredients and preparing the food while it is being transported (the mobile structure comes complete with a macadamia nut crasher, food processor and blender).

While this is all happening, a wireless internet modem connected to the device will enable the audience - positioned at Roe Street carpark - to view the journey via a four-camera controlled live-feed.

Then, upon the trike's arrival at its final destination (the carpark), the audience is invited to enjoy the fruits of Spatula's labour at a 'pop-up' restaurant, complete with stacks of tyres with cushions functioning as seats and tables made out of car bonnets.

“We're really interested in fusing art performance and concepts of sustainability,” Spatula co-ordinator Renae Coles said.

“We started with the idea of food miles and the idea that the closer something is grown or produced to where it is eaten, the less carbon is released into the air.

“We then thought: what if the food was actually being prepared while it is being transported? You would save time and it would be one fluid process, so we built this machine and did a lot of surveying of Northbridge to find where the fresh produce is growing.”

The trike will take in Northbridge's major arteries - Beaufort, William and James streets - and guarantees to be a head-turner.

“It's quite a spectacle - we forget we've been working on it for so long that we find it really normal, but as soon as you take it out onto the street, cars stop and it's quite a spectacle.”

Mega Deluxe Wheel Deal is at Roe Street Carpark, Perth Cultural Centre, from February 1 to 18.
