FORGET the customary runway - an innovative fusion of fashion and theatre could well change the way local collections are unveiled in the future.
Nicole Warren, of Perth production company Nicole in Red, has collaborated with Deborah McKendrick, of Fremantle boutique loungewear label Velvet Sushi, to present Tipsy, an event combining kitschy cabaret and couture.
Some of Perth's leading theatre, dance and circus performers will showcase the latest designs from McKendrick's Cruise summer collection in the hybrid production, designed to show off the fun and flirty range of wearable Jetset-inspired designs for real women.
“Instead of having a runway with people just strutting down, this idea of fashion theatre shows off the collection to show how wearable it is,” Warren said.
“The Cruise collection is all about travel, style, lounging and being luxurious, so we really wanted to create something which showcases that.
“Plus, actors are all different shapes and sizes, so it creates a different look and makes everyday women feel like they can wear the collection as well.”
Tipsy is the second partnership event between Nicole in Red and Velvet Sushi, following their successful season launch at the Canton Lounge Bar in Perth earlier this year.
The harbour-side Fremantle location and the venue - Little Creatures Loft - have helped inform the styling of the event.
“The Loft inspired us in terms of its shape and outlook over the water - it seemed to speak of lounging, cruising and having Champagne, so it gives people the feel that they're going on an adventure somewhere,” she said.
“It's got really retro furniture and is quite boutique and stylish, so I think it's the perfect fit for fashion.”
Already a widespread fixture in Europe's fashion and arts hubs - particularly Berlin - Warren said she predicted more such crossover events for Perth in the future.
Tipsy is at Little Creatures Loft, Fremantle, tonight (November 22) and tomorrow (November 23) at 7pm. Tickets at the door.
