NESTLED in amongst the various shops in Hilton Fresh Centre is Sweetginger Cafe, where owner Ellesha Bevilacqua has put her love of antiques and cooking to good use.
The space is furnished with an eclectic mix of old tables, chairs, armchairs and low chandeliers and music from the 30s and 40s hums in the background.
The only thing more alluring than the decor is the gorgeous array of cakes, muffins and scones.
On this particular day, Ellesha had freshly baked berry and dark chocolate muffins, a spelt brownie, Jewish chocolate cake (an old family recipe), sultana and coconut slice and chocolate and beetroot bread.
However, it was the gluten-free pear and berry cake that had us swooning.
It was nothing like a usual gluten-free cake – that is, it was moist but light and not too crumbly.
Another wonderful touch is the use of antique looking cutlery and crockery.
It just feels so right drinking tea from a gorgeous floral teapot and gold-rimmed cup.
For something a bit more substantial, there is a large range of homemade pies, quiches and sausage rolls, as well as freshly baked and made baguettes, and big sandwiches bursting with interesting combinations.
Ellesha uses only local produce and bakes her delights fresh every morning.
Whether it’s coffee and cake or a pie and smoothie you’re after, Sweetginger is definitely worth a visit.
Just be warned, you won’t be able to come away empty-handed.
