BEING pescetarian (which is not a member of some new religion but rather someone who eats seafood but not bird or land animals), I was looking forward to a visit to Fremantle’s Mussel Bar.
Oddly, even though I enjoy fish, the more unusual creatures from the deep, such as scallops, oysters and octopus, make me squirm a little, but I was game to rise to the occasion to sample some of the more adventurous treasures from the sea on offer.
Before going into that, the venue’s unique location must be pointed out.
Directly over the water in Fremantle’s famous fishing boat harbour, every seat in the house takes advantage of the panoramic view and it’s definitely worth turning up before dark to enjoy a pre-dinner drink.
An extensive wine list and cocktail menu will bring a smile to your face – try the champagne-based French Lover for a celebratory start to the evening as you watch the sun set into the horizon.
With the location so on the money, it’s a nice addition that the food is also exquisite and the service
impeccable.
Presentation is key, with each individual dish being presented as art on a plate and the menu offers enough choice without being overwhelming.
Don’t go past the smoked salmon rolls for an entree.
Wrapped in seaweed, this juicy number is presented in four pieces with julienne vegetables and is absolutely delectable.
For mains, tasmanian salmon, fish of the day and basil marinated tiger prawns all jump off the page.
There’s also a seafood platter served across two tiers with everything seafood that your heart could desire, from tempura soft-shell crab to bugs and yabbies.
Living up to its namesake, Mussel Bar serves mussels in three different varieties – try the green thai chilli mussels for something a bit different.
The dessert list is small but impressive.
The vanilla pannacotta with wild berries compote and almond tuille definitely deserves to win some sort of award.
With its impressive view, drinks list and
beautifully presented food, Mussel Bar is a top choice for romance or a
fun night out.
