Hats off to the Red Turban

INDIA is one of the most densely populated regions on Earth so it makes sense that the many people crowded together there would devise some pretty good ways to eat food.

But because I’ve eaten my way from Bombay to Madras, I was sceptical about my first visit to Red Turban, despite the good reviews I’d heard.

Westernised Indian cuisine often misses the mark, lacking the right sort of spicy punch, or just tries too hard, making a mess of its masala and a train wreck of its tikka.

Red Turban’s saving grace is that it has a bonafide Indian chef working in the kitchen and is run by a Delhi expatriate.

The result is a good mix of beautifully presented traditional northern and southern dishes.

For those shy of hot and spicy flavours, the staff can tailor orders for any desired amount of hotness.

An impressive range of starters jump off the menu - I had onion bhaji, which is onion mixed with chick pea’s flour and spices, rolled into balls and deep fried then served with the all important mint chutney.
For mains I tried Goan fish curry and palaak paneer - a cheese and spinach dish.

Both delivered a good balance of flavours with the vegetarian option being a definite award winner.

The wine list is also impressive with a good selection of local, New Zealand and international options.

The restaurant is cheery and colourful and the wait staff are knowledgeable - a good setting for a family gathering or something more intimate.
