FIRST thing's first - I'm not particularly fond of zoos.

But newspaper column space is at a precious premium at the minute, so there's no room here to get personal or political.

We Bought a Zoo is based on a true story about a man who finds himself at a crossroads following the death of his wife.

With two young children, Benjamin (Matt Damon) sets out for a tree-change and falls for a sprawling old country property. It appears to be the dream home, but there's a small problem: it comes with its very own animal park.

It also comes with its own zoo-keeping team, led by Kelly (Scarlett Johansson), who helps Benjamin get the zoo up to scratch to pass local regulations for a re-opening.

She also awakens renewed romantic desire in Benjamin, helping him realise he is free to love again.

While I take issue with the film's glorification of keeping animals in captivity and the need for heroic human intervention, director and co-writer Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky) has created an expletive-free offering that is hard to fault in so far as providing two hours of wholesome, family-friendly entertainment.

Add a soaring soundtrack by Icelandic wonders Sigur Ros, cinematography saturated with a dreamy sunny glow and sparks flying between a buff Damon and the captivatingly sensual Johansson, and it's hard not to get swept up in this stirring tear-jerker.
